It’s hard to put a name on Black Lavender. Hailing from the shadows of Philadelphia, Black Lavender grew up idolizing the timeless talents in his
father’s record collection. His childhood home was the
one-time recording studio of the legendary Philadelphia soul band The Stylistics. Those influencers made a huge impression on Black Lavender as he began his musical journey. He started rapping in New York freestyling at college parties
and making mixtapes in his dorm room by the name Brotha CJ, his first alter ego.. His love for storytelling and connecting with the crowd made him stand out in his early days as an emcee in campus.
In 2012, shortly after finishing university, he moved
to Europe to continue his adventure as an artist.
Living in Madrid transformed Black Lavender from a rapper into a musician. There he would spend countless late nights immersing himself in the city’s underground urban jam scene. Black Lavender live performances rapidly shift from hip-hop to
alternative-soul with influences ranging from Outkast to Childish Gambino. Whether he plays with a DJ, a guitar, or his high-energy band; his audience leaves his concerts craving more.
He has played sold-out shows in many Madrid’s most
prominent venues and has rocked out in festivals such as Madrid Es Negro, San Isidro, and DCODE. As a debut EP “Everybody Eats” still as a Brotha CJ and has been featured in international commercial campaigns for major bands like Jameson, Santander and Pepe Jeans.
Recently he moved to Lisbon with his new alter ego BLACK LAVENDER. At the moment, he is finishing his second album which is called Whiskey that will be release beginning of 2023.
